雅思G类写作中，大作文和A类相似，小作文则与A类有很大的不同。G类的小作文一般为书信作文，常考的书信有8大类，分别为：邀请、道歉、投诉、建议、申请、推荐、询问和感谢。和A类一样，G类的小作文也要求至少写150字，20分钟左右完成。常见题型格式如下：

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.

Your neighbors have recently written to you to complain about the noise from your house flat.

Write a letter to your neighbors. In your letter· explain the reasons for the noise· apologize

· describe what action you will take Write at least 150 words.

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

书信作文和图表作文相比，内容上可以更加主观一点，即我们可以利用想象合理地设计一些情节，自我发挥的余地较大，但前提是不能跑题，要涉及到题中所给的参考信息。除此之外，书信中不能使用一些口语化的词，如wanna、guy等，更不能出现不雅词汇，俚语也需要规避。
